More options than older RX-V371

I decided to buy this over the older RX-V371 because of a few additonal features that made it much more convenient for me to use. The first feature is the front USB port which recognizes iPhones/iPods and mass storage devices which is a huge improvement. Gone are clunky expensive "docks" for your iPhone/iPod. The second feature is the onscreen (TV) display which makes navigation of settings much easier when sitting from a distant viewing position. No more walking up to the receiver to read the little display. The third feature is the YPAO system which uses the included microphone to test your room's acoustics. There's also 4K Pass-Through which means future 4K displays and Blu-ray players will still be compatible with this receiver. Last is ECO mode which reduces power consumption by the receiver.
This receiver is perfect for the living room or the bedroom. This is actually my second Yamaha home theater receiver system and I have it setup for the bedroom with several Klipsch and Yamaha bookshelf speakers and a Yamaha YST-FSW050BL2 Subwoofer. One of my favorite features is the built-in EQ which allows equalization of EACH channel. On my older 7.1 Yamaha receiver the EQ is only adjustible for the center channel. Very happy choosing to go with this one instead the RX-V371.

Best Thump for the Money

To replace a 17 year old Kenwood, I originally decided to go with the number one pick of the av receiver list, on Amazon. While the Sony looked good, I still wanted more options. So, I chose another Sony on the same list. The whole time I couldn't shake the buyer's remorse I was feeling based on some of the negative reviews. So, with my third and final choice, (and second cancellation) I went with this Yamaha. I really didn't want to spend a whole lot for something designated for the bedroom. And, while this receiver was slightly more than I wanted to spend, the reviews for the RX-V373 left me little doubt. I received my Yamaha approx. 4 days after I had purchased it. The box came in perfect condition and on the first day of the allotted delivery window. I am extremely impressed with both the seller and Amazon for this feat. After opening, and, installation, I plugged in my iPhone and it roared to life. I don't have a subwoofer. Instead I have two large floor Technics and an Infinity center channel. (surrounds on the way) The speaker set up was a breeze, the system is very versatile and allows for stereo, 3 channel, 5 channel and 5.1. All done through on-screen display, with or without the subwoofer and, the ability to select the size of your speakers. The sound is phenomenal! Very crisp, and, very loud!! No problem hearing it in the shower now. A far cry from the old Kenwood it replaced. I have two mild complaints, one being almost non-excistent. First, the HDMI doesn't have system off pass through. Meaning, you have to turn the receiver on in order to have the your signal pass to the TV. I have an older Panasonic plasma with one HDMI in. I also have a HD satellite receiver with HDMI out. Luckily, I had purchased a HDMI splitter on Amazon a month ago. Problem solved. Now in order to amplify my satellite signal when wanted, I'll get a digital optics cord to connect the two. Hopefully, that will do it. If not, There are probably other solutions, as there is a ton of input options. The other non complaint is that you get a CD ROM as your owners manual. I prefer a booklet. Of course, I like trees, so....
Update: Installed Sony surrounds and couldn't be happier. The Mic. included with the receiver to calibrate the speakers works flawlessly. I also figured out how to directly control my iPod once connected. You have to push the mode button on your remote. The lack of a HDMI pass through is kind of annoying though. But hey, for $245, I can live without it.
Update#2: I connected the digital optics cord directly to my TV via. A/V 4 input and now I have surround when I want it. This also means t am not using the HDMI inputs at all. Without pass through, the 4 HDMI's in are limiting. Something to think about next time. All in all, though, I really love everything else.

first impressions

So far so good!! Watched our first Blu-ray Disc with it last night with our surround sound setup and even my wife, who was skeptical of this whole idea, was impressed. It sounded great and I have not even got into the entire setup. I was going to buy the V371 for 159 then seen this updated version but went ahead and splurged on this. The on screen display seems simple enough but seemed to only work when you where on the HDMI input to the TV. As far as picture and sound though it was excellent. I am not a audiophile but I do appreciate great sound and this unit delivers on that. I can't wait to tweak this unit a bit and see what else it will deliver.
