5Wow, wow, wow - superb A/V receiver
By Marty-Z
This is my first Yamaha A/V receiver in over 8 years and I must say Yamaha have practically kocked it out of the park with the RX-A2020.

First of all a bit about my setup: I'm running all in-wall/in-ceiling speakers with separate amplifiers - bypassing the amplification of the RX-A2020. The room is a very large 30x40 with 19ft ceilings - quite a bit of space to fill with sound!!! The previous A/V receiver running my setup was an Onkyo TX-NR709.

The first thing you'll notice when you pull the RX-A2020 out of the box is its build quality which far exceeds the average A/V receiver in both finish and heft. The second thing you'll notice is Yamaha does not include a paper manual, just a simple quick-start sheet. The manual is on CD-Rom, so if you don't have an optical drive handy, dang Macbook air, you'll have to resort to downloading the manual from the Yamaha website. Downloading the manual is a somewhat tedious endeavor as you must register for an account with Yamaha. But hey who needs the manual - right??? Uh, I did. I'm a tech-savvy early adopter but the RX-A2020 includes so many settings and Yamaha-isims (proprietary Yamaha features) that you will be hard pressed to understand what all the settings do unless you read the manual.

That said, you can simply plug in your components, plug in the YPAO Room EQ mic (included with the RX-A2020) set the mic in the sweet spot of your room and hit the auto button and let the RX-A2020 do its thing. The resulting audio and surround processing is nothing short of astonishing!!! Even my wife, who thinks her clock radio from 1996 sounds great, noticed an immediate difference and improvement in the sound quality when viewing movies and television. Compared to the Onkyo the tonal balance is vastly improved and there is much better and pronounced channel separation and seemingly smoother transitions between the channels. An added benefit, as compared to the Onkyo, is the Yamaha runs much, much, cooler in my enclosed custom A/V cabinet. This hopefully will contribute to longevity but time will tell.

The iPhone app that Yamaha has developed is very slick and easy to use as long as you have the RX-A2020 connected via etherent cable to your network as there is no wireless built-in. Speaking of the iPhone, the slickest function that I find myself using all the time, despite a Sonos system in the same room, is the Airplay feature. The integration is super-slick as you never have to leave the iTunes interface on your iPhone - even if the RX-A2020 is turned off! Simply select the song you want to play as you normally would when listing to your iPhone/iPod/iPad, hit the funky box with an arrow button next to the volume slider pick the RX-A2020 and boom the RX-A2020 powers on, turns on my separate amplifiers, and fills the room with your selected song. The volume slider and the side volume buttons on your Phone/iPod/iPad control the volume on the RX-A2020.

If I were to criticize Yamaha it would be for the on-screen menus which look somewhat lo-res and dated, but once you get things setup you'll really never have to revisit those. I can't comment as to the power of the built in amplification or the remote as I am not using either of those but the surround processing is simply phenomenal!!!

Overall, highly recommended!

5All I can say is wow!
By Adrian Lund
This thing is a beast. The sound is awesome and the app controlled is super nice. I'm standing in my living room (zone 2) with a 15 yr old Bose AM5 speakers hooked up to the receiver in the basement and my daughter comes home from college. In 30 seconds she downloads the app and then I tell her to play her favorite song and hit the AirPlay button. We crank it so loud she is just speechless. For a moment, I was cool again. This is just zone 2. In my HT In the basement that i have been working on since Halloween, the A2020 is the heart and soul. I used 4 Bose bookshelf speakers for the surround and surround back, a Bose center channel, JBL L880 s for Rt and Lt, and a Polk SW505 for powered sub. Also the Yamaha 1020 bluray player and to top it off a Visio 65 led that I bought open box at Costco for 990. This system completely blows me away. I watched The Dark Knight on blue ray and it was better than the theatre ( free beer). I'm not going to tell you I'm an audiophile and I have bought a lot of junk in my life because I was just being cheap but this was money well spent. Also the firmware upgrade via network was a breeze. It will take me a long time to tweak this system but it will be a labor of love. The JBLs are pieces of art and I highly recommend. Instead of using the floor pins that ship with it, I built a entertainment shelf and drilled holes and bolted the speakers to the shelf beside the Visio using 5/16 cap screws with fender washers and jam nuts. It is pretty sweet and it gets them up off the floor away from pets, even with screen to help imaging and they will not budge.
I wouldn't go into debt to own this unit but if you are fortunate enough to have the resources to build a system like this, it is a lot of fun. I'm very happy and hope it runs for a long time.
Cons: I need to move my pc media files to fat32 drive as it can't access NTFS drives in my computer. Also the 2nd HDMI output is basically a clone of the first. Only the A3020 can direct an alternate video program to the second HDMI output. I did run a 50' mediabridge HDMI cord to an older 720p HDMI tv in my spare room and it looks great. The funniest part is that the subwoofer on the other side of the house provides plenty of bass for watching the show in both rooms! I wonder when my neighbors will say something? Maybe a move to the country is in order.

4Awesome, it's a computer too, but the 0ms audio delay is too delayed
By Deux Bits
Okay, I got this AV receiver a few weeks ago after months of agonizing over 2020 vs 2010. First, the quality of the sound is similar enough to older Yamaha's - meaning sounds excellent to me, very clean musical sound with great phase integrity (imaging) - although I miss the days of 0.04% THD ratings....

In general all the new features (mostly the same as in the 2010) compared to my older RX-V2500 are a very nice step-up. HDMI is very nice, network interface and capabilities are very good. (I have not yet configured DLNA) The Android based remote app is a nice bonus although access to setup features is a bit peculiar.

One of the big reasons I got this receiver was for the extra two channel amplifier (Zone 2) for outside patio speakers (previously wired as set B on the RX-V2500). Zone 2 still has a major flaw in my opinion and is a big disappointment. Zone 2 as an independent amp will only accept analog input! Seriously?! No extra DAC for Zone 2? "Party mode" is a semi work around, where the digital source will be output (as analog) on all zones. But you cannot watch a game (video) in the Main zone and at the same time play music from an independent digital source on Zone 2. Most bizarre, digital sources that are network related (Pandora, etc.) will play independently on Zone 2. I called Yamaha to confirm this is the designed behavior. This is because the network sources are converted to analog independently and seen by the Zone 2 input as analog.

A minor bone to pick on the HDMI AV inputs. Only the first 4 inputs (and the front panel) have the capability to input analog or alternative audio and video, but this is really minor. So my blu-ray PS/3 is in AV5 instead of AV1.

However, yesterday I discovered a potentially major flaw with this system for me and maybe others - and I'm kind of still in shock that the audio delay at 0ms setting is noticeably and unacceptably large. I'm hoping that someone can tell me how to fix it, or get Yamaha to fix it. This cannot be considered correct. The older RX-V2500 did not have this problem.

So here's the problem: When playing Audio SPDIF (digital audio) from a source (so the receiver has to convert the digital signal - input Audio 2) the delay the RX-A2020 adds is much larger than the old RX-V2500. With the RX-V2500 the delay was undetectable. Now the audio is very annoyingly out of sync with the same source played through another receiver/amplifier.....

This got me worried since I have another (third) amp/speaker set about 30ft away from this new amp using Apple's Airport Express device to provide an Airplay interface to this amp.( I've been using Apple's iTunes on a computer and Airplay to play music through the house to separate Apple devices (Apple TV and Apple Airport Express) for years. For parties, many speakers distributed through the rooms at lower volumes is much better than blasting sound from one room.) I was very concerned about potential delay in the audio signal with my initial purchase of these network Airplay devices - it was undetectable. I was a happy puppy. Music all over the house without wires! And when between rooms the sound was synchronized! Party music nirvana.

Tests show now there is no longer audio synch between all my devices from the same source. Even when using the new Airplay interface to the RX-A2020 instead. The RX-A2020 is too slow at processing the digital audio. If I didn't know that this used to work with a less sophisticated receiver/amplifier and that digital to audio conversion is done in microseconds (the DACs run at over 196Khz sampling rate) I might have just said "Oh well", but I know this is wrong. I cannot set the audio delay to minus so many ms (milliseconds) on Audio 2 or Airplay. Yamaha, when computer's clock speeds are in GHz (nano-seconds for instructions) there is no reason I can think of for this horrendous minimum delay in the audio signal. Please fix this.

Note that this delay problem does not affect sync between speakers all wired off the same amp, nor driven off the zone outputs on the RX-A2020. It is just that the RX-A2020 is significantly slower processing the signal compared to other digital signal driven audio amplifiers. And these days digital signal distribution is the way to go.

High Quality Parts Allow Sound Tuning for Optimum Performance

Every single part in an AV receiver affects the sound quality. For the AVENTAGE models, extra time was taken to find (or develop) exactly the parts wanted and to test them together in prototype units. This testing process allowed sound technicians to, in effect, “tune” the receiver’s sound in order to achieve the highest performance possible.

Yamaha RX-A2020 9.2-Channel Network AVENTAGE AV Receiver

Symmetrical Power Amplifier Layout

This is just one of the many design details that all combine to create a superior receiver. The interior of the unit has been precisely planned, circuit-routed and built so that the left and right channels are physically and electrically isolated. This naturally maximizes channel separation, but also greatly improves signal-to-noise ratio and also helps to achieve a wide, open sound stage.

HQV Vida Processor for High Resolution HD and SD Images

This AV receiver optimizes the video signals they send to the TV by using the most advanced HQV (Hollywood Quality Video) Vida processor. Supporting both SD and HD sources, this processor employs powerful noise reduction functions that even improve low-quality sources. Additional resolution enhancement functions make SD content look like HD.

Yamaha RX-A2020 9.2-Channel Network AVENTAGE AV Receiver

4K Pass-Through and Upscaling Supports Latest High Resolution Video Formats

This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI features including 4K pass-through. 4K refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. While not yet available, 4K displays and sources are sure to become popular in the future. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K data from the source to the display, for image clarity far beyond present standards. It also can perform 4K upscaling to boost a lower resolution image to super high-def resolution. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable, so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable, with no need for an extra optical cable.

Aluminum Front Panel Offers Visual and Aural Benefits

All of the AVENTAGE components feature the same sleek, clean design, with an elegant aluminum front panel and silky touch volume/selector knobs. The aluminum front panel is used to effectively shield sensitive circuitry from external noise and electronic radiation generated by dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, video monitors and so on. This ensures optimum sonic performance in the widest range of installation environments.

Intelligent Amp Assign

Intelligent Amp Assign automatically assigns amplifier channels to certain speakers, depending on what functions are selected. For example, in a 9.2-channel system, when Zone 2 is off, all 7.1 channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two Surround Back channels will be directed to the two speakers and sub in Zone 2, and the Main Zone will receive 5.1 channels of power. Similarly, when CINEMA DSP 3D is on, the two Front Presence speakers will be powered and not the two Surround Back speakers. When CINEMA DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Thanks to Intelligent Amp Assign, there’s no need to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the receiver—one more way Yamaha makes your life a little easier.

Extra-convenient SCENE PLUS

The SCENE PLUS function simplifies operation by providing one touch power-on along with selection of the desired source and the appropriate DSP programs. SCENE PLUS offers a choice of 12 SCENE selections, four of which can be assigned to the second zone in a multi-zone system. SCENE PLUS can be selected from the front panel, remote control, GUI and even from the AV Controller App.

HDMI Front Panel Input

In addition to the large number of HDMI inputs on the rear panel, there is also one on the front panel. This gives you a convenient way to quickly plug in a digital camera or camcorder for highest quality pictures.

Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode

When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source (Blu-ray™ Disc player, game console, etc.) for viewing on the monitor can be changed via the remote control. There’s no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources.

Compressed Music Enhancer

When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV, and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver’s remote unit to control player functions like Skip and Stop. *All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work.

HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker

CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers.

Yamaha RX-A2020 9.2-Channel Network AVENTAGE AV Receiver

Subwoofer Trim for Improved Sound Imaging

The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is “pushed” toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced, enhanced bass sound.

Yamaha RX-A2020 9.2-Channel Network AVENTAGE AV Receiver

Dialogue Lift and Dialogue Level Adjustment for natural dialogue and vocals

Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.

Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)

Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog and vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials, and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening, when you do not want to disturb others.
