Cordsolidation! (A review by a technology gourmet)
By Scott Jones
I purchased the Onkyo NR626 to replace a non-AV receiver. My goal was to simplify the controls for my front-projection system and pave the way for future upgrades. I was looking in the 300-600 price range, and wanted a few extra HDMI ports after connecting all my existing components.
Amazon listed the unit as in-stock with a delivery time of 1-3 months. The unit arrived in just under a week.
The time it took to open the box, yank my old system, and reconnect the speakers and devices was around an hour. Turning the system on, the front panel directed me to the onscreen setup menus. Apart from the on/off button I have not needed to use the front of the receiver.
The 626 has ample HDMI ports, and it was a pleasure removing the separate optical audio cords and video cords from my previous setup. No one likes the spiderweb of cords inherent with all component systems. And reducing down to a single video cable from the receiver to the projector will eliminate one remote from my coffee table. The receiver up-converts everything to a single video resolution (1080p in my case, but 4K video is an option) eliminating the need for any switching of inputs or resolution formats by the projector (Sanyo PLV-Z4). I do not have any 4K/3D players or screens to review those features.
The setup wizard directed me to plug in the included microphone for speaker calibration. It detected my speaker numbers and distances automatically, though I had to reverse the wires on the rear speakers myself. A few more screens confirmed my attached devices and preferences and we were back in operation.
The included "quick start" manuals are sparse, there is a CD labeled "Instruction Manual" which probably has the more detailed information I may never need. The on screen graphic interface is better than what I have seen in the past from AV receivers, still room for improvement in navigation, but perhaps I have grown to expect quite a bit in the smart phone era.
I used wired network connection, and have not yet tried the wireless. The iPad App installed easily and found the unit quickly. Looks to be pretty fully functional, better than Sony iPad Apps I have used recently.
I customized the remote to function as a TiVo controller, with a simple code the receiver provided onscreen, after I hunted through some menus to find where "TiVo" was categorized. Didn't have to crack a manual to do it though, I just followed on screen instructions.
Unit requires an Airplay or Apple TV unit to receive content from your iPad or apple device. I haven't tested those features yet.
So far the meets all my needs, exceeds my expectation, and has 4K and 3D capability waiting for the future. Cost slightly more than a Denon 1713 or 1913 (which both have AirPlay built in) but I am happy with the capabilities, ease of use, and clean design of the Onkyo.

Another value product from Onkyo
By Damodar Chetty
Onkyo receivers are renowned for delivering value for money products, and the TX-NR626 is no exception.
Unboxing
######
Lifting this unit out of the box, you immediately sense the solid heft of well designed power electronics. Other than the receiver, there wasn't a lot in the box - just a manual, some speaker cable labels, an FM antenna, a setup microphone, and a remote.
Features
######
This is one feature-rich receiver with 6 assignable inputs, 2 HDMI outputs, support for 7.1 speakers, Audyssey MultEQ, Bluetooth, Wifi (2.4GHz), streaming over the Internet or from a DLNA server, and powered zone 2.
There's even 4K upscaling support and iOS device integration using Remote Interactive (RI) - features that I do not plan to use.
Setup
####
Coming from an Onkyo TX-NR709, most of the configuration was immediately familiar.
I swapped out my 709, pairing the TX-NR626 with my existing set of Mirage 5.1 Nanosats, and was up and running in minutes - most of which was spent in inserting speaker wires.
At power up, the receiver pretty much held my hand through the setup process.
First, it set up my speaker levels using Audyssey MultEQ - with up to 6 measurable positions. It was also smart enough to detect that I had mis-wired one of my speakers.
Then, it led me through wireless network setup. It detected, and connected to, my network easily. I was then able to setup Pandora access, and was soon browsing my DLNA media server.
Finally, I picked my "listening mode". In Onkyo-lingo this is the receiver's Digital Signal Processing (DSP) mode.
Onkyo's audio processing is based on three dimensions - the source audio format (e.g., Dolby Digital, DPL II, DTS, stereo, etc.), the speaker configuration (such as 5.1 or 7.1), and the processing category based on source format (Movie, Music, Game, or Stereo.) Picking the right mode can be confusing at the start, but it is actually rather intuitive once you get the hang of it.
NOTE: When starting up the TX-NR626, there is a 20-30 second lag before video from the source appears on its output HDMI port. This was an issue with my TX-NR709 as well, and may just be a design constraint with this class of receivers.
Remote Control
###########
The remote control is another joy to use. It is a true universal remote, and I had it configured for my TV and my Comcast cable set top box without any trouble at all.
As with all universal remotes, you need a sequence of button pushes to make this work. Fortunately, the remote not only gives you a generous 30 second window to complete your entry, but also guides you by blinking its LED reassuringly when the configuration has taken. Not only that, rather than hunting for codes in the manual, all configuration happens via on-screen display prompts.
Even better - this remote is extremely functional - in addition to powering up or changing channels on my set top box, I can even control its live-TV DVR functions (incl. accessing recordings!), pull up the program guide, and even display information on the current program.
Conclusion
#######
Once I was done, the family gathered around the receiver to listen to some streamed music from my media server and to watch a movie. While I did end up tweaking the levels set by Audyssey, the audio was very enjoyable. After running it non stop for over 2 hours, I was also pleasantly surprised to note that the receiver was not appreciably hot.
Internet streaming is also really convenient (it works with a minimum of fuss, even with the TV monitor off) and has the usual staples such as Pandora, Spotify, and Last.fm, as well as my new favorite, Aupeo.
I was also impressed by the small touches - such as the ability to dim the display.
If there is one complaint, I wish they'd put one of the 6 HDMI inputs on the front panel - especially given the convenience in connecting the occasional laptop or camcorder.
Overall, this is a very capable receiver, and I'm very thrilled with its performance.
Happy Listening!

Update 6/1:
My NR626 completely lost its ability to detect wireless networks this morning, and could only be fixed with a hard reset - done on the front panel by pressing On/Standby while holding down CBL/SAT. I sincerely hope that this is a 1-time thing as it was annoying to have to re-calibrate my speakers.

Powerful, easy to use, and a great core for your home theater system
By Dean
Easy to configure, intuitive and guided setup, clearly marked connections, TONS of HDMI ports, and this thing sounds fantastic. I am utilizing this receiver in conjunction with Polk audio TSi300 and TSi400 series at the front and rear, respectively. As well as a PSW505 sub and CS10 center channel.
I'm inclined to add another sub, as well as the 'high' speakers and take advantage of the receiver's 7.2 abilities.
The Android app is a very nice addition. I love having the receiver connected to the network with the ability to control levels from my phone and tablet.
This really is a very affordable, powerful, flexible receiver. I'm glad I went with Onkyo this time around.
